Featured Client – From Privately Stuck To Publicly Sweaty

It is my privilege to train some truly remarkable people. Meet Laura, a 35-year-old elementary school teacher living in Illinois.

Just over one year ago, when Laura came to me for help, she was neither severely overweight, nor dangerously unhealthy. Rather, she was stuck in a place that many of us have been . . . stuck slogging her way alone through exercises she hated, or more often avoiding them altogether. Stuck slowly losing confidence and disliking how she looked and felt.

But Laura wasn’t ready to give up. She was determined to make a lasting change.

Laura’s Story

Q: What inspired you to start working out?

I have been an off and on “fitness” girl for years but it never really stuck until last January. I would spend my nights on the treadmill or elliptical and not see any results. That lead me to a gym membership that I paid for and didn’t use for a whole year. Well, I started to feel uncomfortable in my own skin due to some weight gain. I knew I needed something different. So, last January I joined Moose(L)-Up Gym and contacted Todd about his assistance in my new goal of fitness.

Q: What was the most difficult thing to change?

I was dying for a change so I jumped in with both feet. However, I had some insecurities and oddities to overcome though. For example, I had never really heavily perspired in front of another person. But now I sweat like a pig in front of Todd regularly as he puts me through crazy-fun workouts.

Q: Why do you think you have been successful at adopting sustainable fitness habits?

I think I have been successful because I followed the plan that Todd put together for me. The fact that I had someone to hold me accountable made me extra motivated. Also, with the circuit plan that I started with, I felt my energy level skyrocket immediately and my body started to change really quickly. I was motivated by the results and still am!

Q: What is your favorite healthy food? Not-so-healthy food?

My favorite healthy food is broccoli. No joke! I love it and I have it every day. My favorite not-so-healthy food is cheese fries. Oh man…

Q: If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one exercise with you, which would you bring and why? Which exercise would you drown in the ocean and why?

My one exercise would be squats. I get them and they get me. I would absolutely drown push-ups! They are a hateful exercise! However, I do them… and grumble about them the whole time.

Q: What is your current fitness goal?

I have met all of my fitness goals for the past year. I participated in the Gladiator Assault Challenge, Aurora Duathlon, and ran the 10K Pumpkin Run! Those are 3 things I thought I would never be able to do. I also met my goal of an unassisted pull-up by my 35th birthday!

My new goals include improving my time in the Aurora Duathlon and working on specific muscle groups for a bit of body sculpting. I am also really enjoying the Olympic Lifting that I have been working on for the last 2 months. I hope to set a goal with that very soon.

Why Laura Was Successful

Determination: Laura is one of the most determined people I know. When she decides to do something, it happens. It’s not that she never doubted herself. There were moments when negative thoughts crept into her mind but she committed herself to following the plan as consistently as possible.

Planning and Patience: One of the first things we did when Laura hired me was create a plan to build a foundation of mobility and core strength. As she worked through these first difficult weeks, she began to recognize subtle changes in her appearance and ability. Her patient pursuit of incremental improvement enabled her to gradually adopt the Habits of Sustainable Fitness.

Things really started to gain momentum as she made the transition from fundamentals to fun. With a solid foundation in place, Laura began to explore new forms of exercise and set challenging performance goals for herself. Together, we designed a new plan utilizing a combination of ToddFit Online Coaching and ToddFit Private Coaching. Crushing her obstacle course, duathlon, 10K, and pull-up goals has given her the confidence to take on new challenges, including yoga and Olympic weight lifting.

Social Support: Laura is fortunate to have a large network of like-minded individuals who encourage and join her in her activities. Her husband shares Laura’s interest in exercise and they often train and compete together. In addition, several of her neighbors are also members of her gym, and/or yoga studio. At Moose(L)-Up the Olympic weight lifting group is fun and welcoming to lifters of all abilities.
